The Second National Interview of Sexual and Reproductive Health presented last Monday December 12th, emitted a worrying number that represents, without a doubt, a great challenge for our country.
According to the interview, 60% of the Costa Rican women who started their sex life before they were 15 years old, did it with an adult, this suggests that this person could easily take advantage of their vulnerable condition.
Without a doubt, this is an alarming fact and the researchers agree that this is one of the biggest challenges that the study present, since it shows the need that we have, as a country, to protect our teenagers of being victims of abusive relationships. According to Evelyn Durán (adviser to the United Nations Population Fund) to the newspaper La Nación, the age difference causes that the adult practice an abusive and manipulative authority over the young person.
This abusive authority goes from threats and psychological aggression to the impossibility of the use of protection and contraceptive methods. It represents a very big risk for teenagers and shows the great need we have to reinforce the sex education in our country.
