Going to deliver bicycles in the Isle of Chira is a total adventure. The bikes are transported by boat from Costa de Pájaros (Birds’ Coast). The National Institute of Insurances, that donated transportation, bravely sent the truck through the most difficult roads to carry out this feat. However, as soon as we see the happy faces of the young students, we forget the road and know it’s worth its while.
As a token of appreciation, the Managing Board of the college offers us a small tour by some schools of the Isle. There, we are made aware of the difficult circumstances the students and teachers must deal with. In one school, classes are imparted in a hangar divided in 6 classrooms, while a bigger school is being built. For internet, they depend on other schools. In order to motivate the students, they make a vegetable garden and have fruit trees behind the school. The students learn to take care of the plants and are allowed to take the harvest home.
In another school, the director arrives each week from Coronado, in the center of the country, from where she makes the trip by bus. She comes and goes each week because of her own 9 kids, 2 still live with here. Vocation…there is no other word for this much dedication.
